Professor Ron Levy

I am a professor in the Law School whose research focuses on deliberative theory and practice in contentious contexts, such as controversial human rights cases and deep division between groups. I hope to use this deliberative expertise to contribute to the reforms currently contemplated for the Academic Board. As a member of the ANU Governance Group, I have been closely involved in developing reform proposals, including as co-leader of the Academic Board reform subgroup. Our submissions emphasise the importance of democratic voice, accountability, and deliberative decision-making – that is, decision-making that is informed, rigorous, collaborative and sound.

I have been at ANU for 12 years and care deeply about the university, its staff and its public mission. I teach large student cohorts about Australian political and legal institutions. Drawing on my background in Canada and other overseas jurisdictions, I also bring comparative perspectives to my research and teaching – and to my service roles both within and outside the university. I have been very actively involved in public and media engagement on a range of reform debates, including marriage equality and the Voice.
