Message from the Interim Vice-Chancellor
The Australian National University was established in 1946 to serve the nation through knowledge, education and research. That purpose continues to guide our work today. Our context always changes, and 2025 was a year of significant challenge and heightened scrutiny for the University and the higher education sector more broadly, including a number of external inquiries into governance and institutional practices. These matters were taken seriously across ANU and have prompted continued focus on strengthening governance, transparency and accountability.
The Renew ANU program, a program of organisational change, initiated in 2024 and continuing through 2025 is nearing completion towards the end of 2026. During the year, the University also experienced a period of leadership transition. Throughout this time, our priority remained the same: to provide stability for our community and to continue the core work of teaching, research and service to the nation. We recognise that these events were felt deeply across our community, and we remain committed to rebuilding confidence through clear governance, open communication and steady leadership.
This Annual Report reflects the many significant contributions from our staff and students across our campus. It speaks to the depth of talent across our community, our ongoing commitment to First Nations peoples and knowledges, and to the impact of our work across research, education and broader community, social and entrepreneurial engagement.
Across ANU, our academic and professional staff work together to generate knowledge and support education that contributes to Australia’s future and informs some of the most complex challenges facing our region and the world. This includes work that advances climate and energy solutions, strengthens democratic institutions, and deepens Australia’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific. Our education shapes graduates who are thoughtful, capable and prepared to contribute in a rapidly changing world. These efforts are reflected in the University’s continued standing across a range of global rankings and measures of impact. Together, they speak to the care, rigour and sense of purpose that define our University.
The generosity of our alumni and donor community remains an important part of our story. In 2025, ANU secured more than $71 million in philanthropic support, enabling investment in research, student opportunity and initiatives of national significance. This included transformational support for Indigenous education and economic empowerment, as well as continued engagement from more than 18,000 alumni contributing through giving, volunteering and advocacy.
Most importantly, this report reflects a community to celebrate. The achievements captured here are made possible by the dedication, expertise and generosity of our staff, students, alumni and partners. As Australia’s only national university, we remain focused on the role we play in contributing to the nation - and to the world - through knowledge, education and engagement. We continue to build a university that serves with both purpose and care.
