Professor Peter Yu

Vice-President (First Nations)

Peter Yu is a Yawuru man from Broome in the Kimberley with over 40 years’ experience in Indigenous development and advocacy at the state, national and international level and is the inaugural Vice-President (First Nations) at The Australian National University. 

He was Executive Director of the Kimberley Land Council during the 1990s and a member of the national leadership team negotiating the Federal Government’s response to the 1992 Mabo High Court judgement on Native Title. He was a key negotiator to the Yawuru Native Title Agreement and the inaugural CEO of the Yawuru Corporate Group and has been instrumental in the development of many community-based organisations and initiatives that have had an enduring influence on the Kimberley region. 

He has held a number of senior Indigenous representative positions over the course of his career. 

He is the current Chair of the First Nations Economic Empowerment Alliance (FNEEA) negotiating the first comprehensive Economic Policy Framework with the Commonwealth Government.
